Features

  • Compact Modular Design
  • High-Load Linear Guide Rails
  • Built-In Limit Switches on the Stage
  • Hall Effect Encoded DC Servo Motors
  • Bundle Offer Includes TDC001 T-Cube Driver and Power Supply

The compact, motorized MTS25 stages feature a dual set of linear rails with continuously recirculating ball bearings on a moveable carriage. This mechanism provides smooth, low friction movement and ensures high load carrying capacity (10 lbs (4.5 kg) vertical and 25 lbs (12 kg) horizontal). The drive power is provided by a DC servo motor with a 67:1 gear head and a 1.0 mm pitch lead screw. A built-in Hall Effect encoder provides 512 counts per revolution of the motor.

The linear displacement of the actuator per encoder count is given by: 512 x 67 = 34,304 encoder counts per revolution of the lead screw,
whereas the linear displacement of the lead screw per encoder count is given by: 1.0 mm / 34,304 counts = 2.9 x 10-5 mm (29 nm).

The addition of limit switches on the stage itself ensures controlled motion within the parameters of the unit and prevents overdriving in both directions. The stage is shipped with 1.6 ft (0.5 m) of cable. An 8 ft (2.5 m) extension cable (PAA632) is available separately.

The MTS25-Z8E bundle includes the stage, together with our popular T-Cube DC Controller (TDC001) and Power Supply (TPS001).

The ultra-compact DC driver cubes have been designed specifically to work with Thorlabs DC servo product lines. These new drivers are USB-interfaced, compact, single-channel motor drivers designed to operate with a variety of DC brushed motors. They contain a full embedded controller and driver circuit and can be operated with or without a PC.  While compact in footprint (2.5" x 2" x 1.6"), these units include full motion control capability including velocity profile settings, limit switch handling, and "on-the-fly" changes in motor speed and direction. For more advanced operations that involve the use of different actuator configurations, these drivers allow control over the closed loop PID parameters and adjustment of settings such as leadscrew pitch and gearbox ratio.

Adapter Plates

Base plates (MTS25A-Z8) are available which securely fix the stages to the work surface. The stages are also configurable in XY, XZ, and XYZ in both left- and right-handed configurations using the MTS25B-Z8 spacer plate and the MTS25C-Z8 angle brackets. For added flexibility, the MTS50-Z8 2" (50 mm) travel stages can be configured together with the MTS25-Z8 stages featured here.

The MTS25CSA Cage System Adapter Plate is a universal, lockable plate that allows the MTS25-Z8 Translation Stages to be mounted easily onto the 60 mm Cage System, adding flexibility to the cage system. When the stage is fitted into the cage system, the distance from the surface of the stage to the cage center line is 23.5 mm. See the Application Options tab for more details.

Cage System Adapter

The MTS25CSA cage system adapter is used to mount the MTS25-Z8 stages within a 60 mm cage system. Optical components such as lens mounts, which are fixed to the stage, can be positioned quickly within the area of interest prior to being positioned precisely using the stage.

How will this linear stage perform when mounted vertically under low vacuum(100mbar). Can you provide a quotation for a vacuum version of this stage

Response from Tim at Thorlabs: The stage itself should be fine for this low vacuum. The motor, however, would likely require adding vacuum compatible greases. We will contact you with a quotation.

Response from Jeremy at Thorlabs: It could be that the velocity and acceleration settings are set too low. I will get in contact with you directly to discuss about this.

I bought two MTS25/M-Z8s' with controllers. When I bought them, they moved fast. But moving speed of them has slowed down now. Could you let me know any possible causes and how to solve this problem? I like to move the stage faster as when I bought them. Thanks

Hello, recently we have bought two motorized stages, a MTS25 and a MTS50. The MTS25 respect the spec for bidirectional repeatability and home location accuracy but the MTS50 is less good. Instead to have bidirectional of 1.6um it is more like 5 or 6um and the home location accuracy is around 25um. Do you have an idea why my MTS50 is less good.

Response from Buki at Thorlabs: Our motion control products use APT software, which use ActiveX control for various programming environments such as LabVIEW. We have some tutorials online available to help you get started. You can find them at: http://www.thorlabs.de/images/TabImages/GuideToLabVIEWandAPT.pdf http://www.thorlabs.de/tutorials/Intro.cfm You can also download the APT software package at http://www.thorlabs.de/software_pages/ViewSoftwarePage.cfm?Code=APT and run it in simulation mode to get familiar with the software. Please contact TechSupport@thorlabs.com if you have further questions

Is it possible to provide LabView Drivers for these translators ?

Response from Buki at Thorlabs: Thank you for your feedback. A position error of 3mm is much higher than normal. We will contact you directly to get your serial number. In the meantime, please check that you have set up the APT config programme to the correct stage type.

I am using the MTS25 with a t-cube controller. For a 10 mm step entered in the software, I get approx. 7 mm actual translation. Can that be corrected with a calibration file? If so, can I do the calibraiton myself, or where do I get such a file?
