Adjustable Lens Tubes, SM1 Compatible

Features

  • Allow Precise Positioning of Optic within Lens Tube System
  • SM1 (1.035"-40) Internal and External Threading
  • Mount Ø1" (25.4 mm) and Ø1/2" (12.7 mm) Optics

Thorlabs introducted the SM Series Threading standards to ensure compatibility over a broad range of product lines. SM Series Threaded components offer a simple and efficient solution for building optomechanical structures. The SM Threaded products available, including lens tubes and cage system components, fixed and kinematic mounts, irises and diaphragms, provide flexibility when constructing complex optical systems.

Adjustable length lens tubes allow for the adjustment of an optic's position within a lens tube system; these adjustable length lens tubes are ideal for fine optical tuning in a laser cavity. SM1ZM and SM1NR05 provide linear travel without rotating the mounted optical element. A double helical mechanism moves the interior SM Threaded barrel back and forth while restricting any rotational movement. This allows one to accurately control the exact working distance of an optical element within a system.

SM Series Threading Specifications

Thorlabs' lens tubes utilize a series of non-standard threadings. Threading specifications are given below for our SM threadings utilized in our lens tube and cage system components so that you can machine mating components to suit your application. For threading specifications other than what is listed here, please contact Tech Support.

Response from Buki at Thorlabs: Thank you for using our feedback forum. We have contacted you to get more information about how you want the SM1V05 or SM1V10 rotatinglens tube customized. For an off-the-shelf solution, you could consider combining a lens tube with a rotating lens tube.

I have need of a 1" diameter lens tube that has the external threaded range offered by the SM1V05, but has a internal threaded tube length of 1". The opposite of the SM1V10 I guess. Please let me know if such customization is possible. If so I would probably want to order at least 15-20 units.

Response from Buki at Thorlabs: The SM1V10 is made from anodized aluminum and it is not recommended for vacuum applications because it could outgas quite a bit. However, we could strip the anodization off to expose the bare aluminum underneath. We have contacted you regarding a quote for an unanodized version of the SM1V10.

I'm interested in using part # SM1V10 under vacuum. Can you tell what material(s) it's made of and whether it is vacuum-compatible? Thanks, Andy

Response from Javier at Thorlabs to johannes.piel: Thank you very much for contacting us. The required hex key size for the locking set screw used in the SM1ZM is 0.035". We offer this hex key as part of our TC2 ball driver and hex key kit and the HK2A98 hex key kit: http://www.thorlabs.com/NewGroupPage9.cfm?ObjectGroup_ID=1407

I very much like the SM1V10 system, but wanted to buy an additional locking ring. I realise it does not existed. Maybe you could add it to your product line! Cheers, Lucia

A response from Greg at Thorlabs to lucia.hackermuller: Thank you for leaving feedback! We actually do offer the locking ring, but it looks like we did not do a good job of populating it in all appropriate places of our website. I have added the SM1NT to this web page based on your feedback.

Ø1" Rotating Adjustable-Length Lens Tubes
simple drawing of zoom lens tube
  • SM1V05 Travel Range: 0.32" (8 mm)
  • SM1V10 Travel Range: 0.81" (20.7 mm)
  • Max Optic Thickness 0.42" (10.7 mm)

These SM1-threaded (1.035"-40) adjustable-length lens tubes allow Ø1" optics to be precisely positioned along the optical axis of a lens tube system. To operate, mount the optic in the adjustable-length lens tube using the included retaining ring. Then thread the adjustable-length lens tube into a compatible (i.e., matching threads) lens tube or SM1 threaded lens mount until the optic is at the desired position. At this point, the included SM1NT locking ring can be used to fix the position of the optic.

These rotating adjustable-length lens tubes are an ideal solution for fine tuning of the first and last lenses in a lens tube system. Although a lens tube can be attached to the front of the adjustable-length lens tubes, it should only be done after the position of the optic has been fixed since this lens tube will need to be free to rotate and translate if the position of the optic is changed. Like our standard lens tubes, these adjustable-length lens tubes are made of black anodized aluminum.

Non-Rotating Adjustable Lens Tubes
  • Positional Adjustment of an Optic Without Rotation
  • SM1ZM: 4 mm of Travel at 0.5 mm Per Revolution for Ø1" Optics
  • SM1NR05: 18 mm of Travel at 17 mm Per Revolution for Ø1/2" Optics

High-Precision Differential Zoom Housing for Ø1" Optics, Non-Rotating
The SM1ZM non-rotating zoom housing provides 4 mm of linear travel without rotating the optical element mounted in it. A fine helical mechanism moves the front barrel back and forth while restricting any rotational movement, preventing any rotation of the attached lens tubes or optics (see image to the right). This high precision (0.5 mm per revolution) zoom housing provides the ability to accurately control the exact working distance of an optical element within a system prior to locking it into place. To operate, mount a Ø1" optic in the zoom housing and secure it using the included SM1RR retaining ring. Then attach the SM1ZM to an internally threaded SM1 lens tube or mount. Once secure, the outer ring of the SM1ZM can be used to precisely position the optic. It should be noted that only the outer ring rotates; the optics and lens tubes attached to the SM1ZM do not rotate. Additionally, the externally threaded side of the SM1ZM provides a static reference, neither rotating nor translating (see image to the right). Although a lens tube can be attached to front of the SM1ZM, it should only be done after the position of the optic has been fixed since this lens tube will need to be free to translate if the position of the optic is changed.

Long-Travel Zoom Housing for Ø1/2" Optics, Non-Rotating
The SM1NR05 non-rotating zoom housing provides 18 mm of linear travel without rotating the optical element mounted in it. A double helical mechanism moves the interior SM05 barrel back and forth while restricting any rotational movement. This high precision (17 mm per revolution) zoom housing provides the ability to accurately control the exact working distance of an optical element within a system. To operate, mount a Ø1/2" optic in the zoom housing and secure it using the included SM05RR retaining ring. Then the SM1NR05 can be mounted on any SM1 threaded lens tube or mount. Once secure, the outer ring of the SM1NR05 can be used to precisely position the optic. Unlike all of the other adjustable lens tubes on this page, the SM1NR05 can be attached between two fixed Ø1" lens tubes while still retaining the ability to adjust the position of the optic.
