Thorlabs' Fiber Optic Attenuator and Terminator Kits each contain six fixed attenuators, five terminators, and a selection of dust caps. Components in the FAK03 kit have FC/PC connectors while those in the FAK05 kit have FC/APC connectors. All components are packaged in a plastic box that measures 7.0" x 3.5" x 1.25" (177.8 mm x 88.9 mm x 31.8 mm) and has nine labeled compartments. The label on the lid indicates the contents, associated Thorlabs item number (where applicable), attenuation value and tolerance for the attenuators, and wavelength range and return loss for the terminators. The table to the right lists the description and quantity of each item included within each kit. Please see the Specs tab for a complete list of specifications for all kit components.
Attenuators
The Fixed Fiber Optic Attenuators included in these kits allow one to attenuate an optical signal easily by plugging an FC/PC- or FC/APC-terminated fiber directly into the back end of the attenuator connector. The input of the attenuator has a 2.2 mm wide key female connector, making it compatible with both narrow key and wide key male connectors. The output of the attenuator has a 2.0 mm narrow key male connector. These single mode attenuators are made with polarization-insensitive doped fiber to achieve the specified attenuation over the operating wavelength range (1240 - 1620 nm).
Terminators / Light Traps
The Fiber Terminators / Light Traps included in these kits are designed to be used with ports that do not have an output fiber connected to them. Terminating connectors reduce back reflections into the input fiber by at least 50 dB by coupling emitted light into FG025LJA fiber and then diffusing the light within the terminator. In contrast, typical back reflections from an unused port can be as poor as 20 dB. Our terminators are for use with light from 400 - 2100 nm and have male, FC/PC or FC/APC 2.0 mm, narrow key connectors.

 (posted 2024-02-20 07:49:54.953) Dear,
The description mentions that the product uses 'polarization-insensitive doped fiber'. Does this mean that polarization of the input signal is maintained at the output of the attenuator?
Kind regards,

(posted 2024-02-22 07:45:50.0) Thank you for contacting Thorlabs. "Polarization insensitive" in this context means that the attenuation is not going to be dependent on the input polarization state of the light. These attenuators do not use polarization maintaining fiber, so the polarization extinction ratio will be negatively impacted by the attenuator. We do not have an estimate for how much the polarization state would change. Polarization can be maintained in standard non-polarization maintaining fiber over short distances. There is a small amount of non-polarization maintaining fiber within these attenuators, so I would not expect the polarization extinction ratio to be too severely negatively impacted. However, there is no consideration to polarization state with key-alignment. Meaning, the key of the attenuator will not be aligned to any particular orientation because there are no stress rods inside the attenuator. |
